This website introduces a new book on Parisian silver from the period 1926-1935 made by a young silversmith called Maurice Adrien Muller. Maurice worked for the House of Bloch-Eschw\u00e8ge, that produced gold and silverware in the Marais from 1920 till the outbreak of the Second Word war. He was born in Paris in 1906 and twenty years later he was given the job of \u201cdesigner\/silversmith\u201d. From his hand we have an archive of watercolours, drawings, pictures and production books that was kept safe by the family of Jean-Loup Eschw\u00e8ge. He was also a silversmith and the last owner of the House until 2018. I met him in Bayonne in January 2020.<\/p>

The book relates to the hectic years of artistic proliferation and splendid entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s, only to end in pain and disaster. Silver, passion, adventure, discovery, historical context and catastrophe are the elements of this story. It is also about the \u201cFrench Grandeur\u201d in silver-crafting over the past four centuries and about a young Parisian silversmith who came, fresh from the benches of a well-known arts and crafts school to the rescue of a French firm to satisfy the sudden demand for modernist and cubist silver.<\/p>

The story describes the \u201cdiscovery\u201d of the silver and archive, considers the significance of the location of the Marais and briefly delves into the different styles from Renaissance and Baroque up to Art D\u00e9co. The narrative reveals, among other things, issues such as the appreciation - even exaltation - of the achievements of silversmiths, decrees issued to melt down the nation\u2019s treasures, hedonism and the intricate links between silver and our table habits.<\/p>

Nowadays it may appear that silver has lost its lustre, but nothing is further from the truth: today there are many silversmiths who excel in making works of silver \u201cpalatable\u201d again and vie for a place in the next section of the Silversmiths\u2019 Hall of Fame.<\/p>

The book contains 65 illustrations and some 180 plates, opening the archives to the fullest extent possible.<\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n
